Afronaut PRO, the latest iteration of the typeface introduced in 2019, emerges as a captivating blend of vernacular Latin and Arabic typography discovered on the Senegal-Mauretania Border in St. Louis, Africa. The inspiration draws from the geometric precision inherent in Arabic script, seamlessly intertwining with smooth, rounded elements.
The genesis of Afronaut PRO traces back to Bartek Sabela's "Afronautics – from Zambia to the Moon," a narrative of Zambia's audacious foray into space exploration. Motivated by this narrative, the typeface seeks to encapsulate a harmonious synthesis of vernacular Arabic script, futuristic typography, and distinctive lettering encountered during explorations across GuinĂ©e, Bissau, Gambia, Senegal, Mauritania, and West Sahara.
Afronaut PRO boasts seven distinct weights, and many of its letters exhibit three diverse forms. Beyond its typographic versatility, Afronaut PRO seamlessly doubles as a refined alternative to the conventional Yalla Typeface. In its essence, Afronaut PRO transcends mere letters; it encapsulates a visual odyssey echoing the cultural tapestry of Africa's diverse typography.
